8vo. 7.75 x 5.25 inches. [2] pp. x + 536 pp. + [2] + 32 pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt' decorated by gilt blocks and bands on spine. Some wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine, but otherwise a very good copy. 4 Newspaper cuttings pasted on to [p.iv-v]. Illustrated by 20 engraved plates (plate II misnumbered as plate I) and by coloured frontispiece. Tenth edition of a pioneering standard work on the history of signboards in England, examined by general themes, with a detailed subject index at the end. There is an interesting appendix on a controversial signboard exhibition held in London in 1762. John Camden Hotten (1832-73) set up his publishing and bookselling business in London in 1855 and was also a prolific author. John Larwood was the pseudonym of Herman Diederik Johan van Schevichaven (1827-1918). The first edition of this popular work was published in 1866.
