8vo. 7.25 x 4.5 inches. 240 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt. Extremities worn, including splits at head and tail of spine. Foxing of flyleaves, title and index pages, scattered elsewhere; otherwise a very good copy. Early signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by wood engravings. A Baptist magazine, orientated towards children, containing numerous religious articles, but also much of general interest, e.g. accounts of The Gulf Stream, The Pomegranate, and Hop Gardens (especially Rainham area), p.111-14. A series of four opening articles, A Visit to Kent, starts with accounts of the Weald, including Cranbrook, but then becomes religious in nature. The Friendly Companion, started 1835, was published and edited by John Gadsby (1808-93).
