FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 196 + publisher's advertisement flyer tipped in. Bound in original quarter black cloth over multicoloured decorative boards, with printed paper title label. Ex-library copy with stamps, etc. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Scattered foxing, including flyleaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The ninth collection of short stories by Alfred Edgar Coppard (1878-1957), born in Folkestone, who overcame the poverty of his upbringing and moved to Oxford as a clerk in 1907. In 1919, he gave up his paid employment to set up as a full time writer, his first short story collection being published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1921. He became to be regarded as one of the most accomplished and original short story writers of his time.
