Notes

Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. A farmer was fined forty shillings for ploughing over a public footpath. A long account is given of the life of the Esquimaux taken from a just published private diary. In Rochdale Mr. Sadler made an ascent in balloon filled from the local gasworks and descended at Rawcliffe only seven miles away. At the Guildhall, Eliza Cockburn, 'a rather interesting looking girl,' was charged with attempting to set fire to the house of her master, apparently because of her mischievous behaviour he was attempting to have her returned to her parish: 'She was composed, but seemed sensible of the magnitude of her imputed crime, the perspiration glistening on her face.' A group of gentlemen, mostly Guards Officers won a wager for one thousand sovereigns, rowing from Oxford to Westminster Bridge (118 miles) in a six-oared wherry in sixteen hours. Recorded shipping movements at Folkestone were the arrival of the Aid Hoy, Richard Spicer, master from London and the sailing of the Lord Folkestone Packet, Jacob Spicer, master for London with a full cargo; also several Folkestone fishing luggers to the North Foreland on a mackerel voyage.
