Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. An editorial on Christmas emphasises the decorating of houses with evergreens. Sir Gregory page Turner, 4th Baronet, a wealthy landowner of Battlesden House, Bedfordshire was sued for the non-payment of thirty five bills by tradesmen for essential items, whereas he readily paid those from whom he bought items normally considered worthless such as a collection of flints. His lack of personal hygiene and filthy clothing were alluded to; also an occasion when he forced his way into the presence of Lady Turner in Baker Street and following her screams was found by a servant 'in a state that was too disgusting to describe.' The jury found him of unsound mind and unable govern himself or his estates. In Kent the driver of the van from London to Dover was dreadfully injured at Gravesend attempting to stop its horses who set off after the guard of the Union coach blew his horn.
