FIRST EDITION. 4to. 11.5 x 10 inches. lxxiii + [i] + 427 + [1] + [1] pp. colophon. Title page in red and black. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board and spine with contrasting black title label, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper. A fine copy. Illustrated throughout by 45 reproductions in black and white and 147 in colour, including frontispiece and many whole page plates, numbered in text. Decorated by title page vignette. Tree patterned endpapers. The third volume in a lavishly illustrated series cataloguing the collections 0f the Oak Spring Garden Library, Virginia. It is arranged by themes, such as still-life, Tulipomania, women painters, etc. It includes the work of many of, the great names of botanical artists such as Pierre Joseph Redoute. By Italian art historian, Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi (b.1939) of the University of Siena. The bibliographic descriptions are by Julia Blakely, Rare Books Librarian. The collections were formed by Rachel Lambert Mellon (1910-1914), horticulturist, garden designer and book and art collector, second wife of philanthropist, Paul Mellon (1907-99).
