FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8 x 5.5 inches. [6] + 478 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt with gilt series block on front board. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, which has small splits along both edges. Foxing throughout, but otherwise a very good copy. 1910 signature and 1928 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's series device on title page. A chronological survey of literature in Arabic from the Pre-Islamic era and the Koran through the periods of the Omeyvad Dynasty and the Abbasids, up to the time of writing, with a concentration on the earlier period. Published as LItterature arabe in 1902 and translated into English from the author's manuscript by Lady Mary Loyd. By Clement Huart (1854-1926), French orientalist, specialising in Arabic, Persian and Turkish, who served as a diplomat in Damascus and Constantinople, held academic positions in Paris and who published Histoire des Arabes (2 vols., 1912-13).
